E-COMMERCE: IMPROVING QUERY COMPLETION RATES FOR A LARGE UK E-COMMERCE WEBSITE
Not on the High Street was facing challenges with their e-commerce site search and the 150,000+ products that were available through a single checkout. Users were not finding the right products quick enough, and thus there was a high bounce rate and low conversion. They engaged Search Technologies to conduct a search application assessment based on our e-commerce scorecard. After implementing phrase searching, query completion, spelling corrections, ‘did you mean’ functionalities, and engine scoring, the user experience improved. Query completion rates rose by 2%, resulting in a positive impact on conversion rates, which is significant when working with a catalog this large.

GOVERNMENT: IMPROVING THE SEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR SCIE USERS
Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) engaged Search Technologies to assess their search infrastructure to improve the user search experience. After migrating SCIE to the Solr search engine, a comprehensive range of Web 2.0 search features and best practices were implemented, such as a robust document processing methodology using the Aspire framework, information visibility and transparency, assistive search features such as dynamic navigators (faceted search), auto completion drop downs, and synonym lists. As a result, the new architecture and features not only provided modern website search best practices, with an intuitive and user-friendly experience but also increased SCIE’s user satisfaction and brand loyalty.

MANAGED SERVICES: UTILISING OUR GLOBAL SUPPORT TEAM TO ENHANCE FAST ESP
Norton Rose Fulbright is a global law firm who engaged Search Technologies to provide managed services to support a FAST ESP system that indexes a wide variety of different data sets from many Filesystems, Relational Databases, and internal websites. Some of the services provided include system monitoring, system tuning, architecture advice, metadata manipulation, relevance ranking tuning, adding new content sources, and problem-solving. More recently, we have helped Norton Rose Fulbright understand their migration options with a roadmap plan (via our Search Assessment) towards replacing FAST ESP with open source technologies.

E-COMMERCE: IMPROVING SEARCH RELEVANCY TO BETTER SERVE CUSTOMERS
Just Eat is the UK’s leader in online food and delivery service and operates in 13 countries. There are over 40,800 takeaway restaurants signed up for Just Eat, which uses a robust technology platform to offer an efficient on-line ordering service. Just Eat engaged Search Technologies to improve its search relevancy by using additional open source StreetMap data. Before this improvement, cities and towns were known about in their dataset, but street names were not. The search engine performed well for searches like “Chinese restaurants that deliver to Finchampstead,” but did not work very well for searches like “Chinese restaurants that deliver to Booth Drive.” We added this capability using a lookup based on our Aspire technology and open source data sets. The second project consisted of tuning up the Elasticsearch relevancy models to surpass the search relevancy achieved by Solr.

PROPERTY DEVELOPER: INCREASING SEARCH ACCURACY FOR KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Argent, a property developer, engaged Search Technologies to help optimise their Knowledge Management System using its existing search system based on SharePoint 2013. In particular, they had identified a list of specific search scenarios that could be used to form the basis for some improvements to the search settings. They also wanted to make better use of the search functionality available within SharePoint to improve the results for the representative queries they had identified. Search Technologies made a prioritised list of recommendations in several areas including rank tuning and linguistics, as well as some user interface, process, and infrastructure improvements.
The main focus of the project was on high accuracy search by customising and tuning search relevancy, as well as metadata improvements, prioritising up-to-date content, and user interface improvements. They also implemented a custom guided search form to help make better use of the available metadata and improved their use of analytics to provide insights into how people were using the system. As a result, they have received much better feedback from their users and an overall increase in usage.
