Why Wasn’t Search Technologies at Lucene/Solr Revolution 2017?
If You Were Wondering Why We Weren’t There
Search Technologies was an inaugural exhibitor at Lucene/Solr Revolution, the first major conference dedicated to open source search technologies. We have been attending the conference for nearly ten years. So why weren’t we there in 2017?
Lucene/Solr Revolution brings together IT professionals and speakers from diverse industries to share their work experience and to provide intensive training to those interested in open source search technologies. Being a vendor-agnostic consulting firm with extensive expertise in open source search engines, Lucene/Solr Revolution has always been a fitting venue for us to not only showcase our services but also foster training for our technical engineers. For nearly a decade, attendees could see us exhibiting and presenting at the event. Our Chief Architect, Paul Nelson, was always a popular staple on the agenda.
This year, however, everything changed. Lucene/Solr Revolution’s organizer, Lucidworks, informed us that we were no longer welcome to exhibit or speak at the event. Lucidworks considered us a company that:
- Competes with their professional services group (maybe)
- Is not likely to resell Lucidworks’ platform exclusively (we are vendor-agnostic, after all), and,
- Has technology assets that compete with their Fusion platform (partially true)
While we understand Lucidworks’ decision from a business standpoint, we do not believe it is in the spirit of a conference promoted around open source search. You may as well call it “Lucidworks Fusionworld.”
If you are a Search Technologies customer or technology partner who disagrees with Lucidworks’ decision to exclude us from Lucene/Solr Revolution, please voice your opinion to their management. With your support, maybe we’ll see you there next year!
In the meantime, we want to provide you with some options to check out Paul Nelson’s past and most recent presentations.
Missed Our Presentations? Don’t Worry, We’ve Got You Covered
Past presentations by our Chief Architect, Paul Nelson, were very well received by Lucene/Solr Revolution attendees. Check out two of his most recent ones from the past shows: Searching the Enterprise Data Lake with Solr and Solr Search Accuracy Metrics and Predictive Analytics. If you are in New York, you may also catch Paul at the local NYC Apache Lucene/Solr Meetup group.
In addition, Paul has recently done a webinar on Natural Language Processing (NLP), a “hot topic” in our space at the moment. You can watch the on-demand webinar here. You can also meet us at various other search and big data analytics events and access our great content such as blogs, on-demand webinars, tutorials, etc. And as always, if you missed us at an event or a webinar but would like to learn more about search and analytics, simply reach out to us.
