Enterprise Search and Big Data: Life Sciences and Other Applications

Search Technologies CEO, Kamran Khan, at KMWorld 2015

A couple of weeks ago, I had an opportunity to return to the annual KMWorld Conference as a keynote speaker. Some of you may already be regular attendees. For those who haven’t been, KMWorld brings together professionals and experts in the knowledge management, content management, collaboration, and digital spheres to share insights and strategies.

Throughout the years, KMWorld veterans may have heard my discussions around enterprise search applications - how they help improve knowledge management and unravel a variety of business challenges, from corporate wide search and publishing to recruiting and e-commerce search. My keynote this year reaffirms the same while exploring a complementary technology that has taken enterprise search further: big data.

Like many buzzwords, “big data” can be a vague concept. I mean, how many times have you heard analysts and marketers refer to "big data" in various contexts? But what I wanted to highlight in my presentation was the transformative impact of big data on enterprise search. In the last few years, we’ve seen more and more use cases in which big data and search work so well together to do powerful things (and industry pioneers agreed). As disparate business data grows, big data architectures have become a natural fit for many modern organizations that require accuracy, speed, and agility for their large-scale, complex search and analytics applications.

A prime example is a case story of one of our customers - a global life sciences corporation that maintains vast amounts of structured and unstructured data for multiple business purposes. We've been working with the customer to help connect data silos across the globe, create a central data staging repository or the “enterprise data lake” (which, by the way, warrants another discussion); then, make that data accessible for end-users to search, analyze, and solve a wide range of puzzling problems.

To hear the full case story as well as other emerging enterprise search and big data applications, check out my KMWorld presentation below.
